Nursing babies, chasing toddlers, planning activities, and cleaning all day make it hard for a mama to read her Bible let alone purposefully study the Bible. It takes a willing heart, discipline, and commitment to maintain a Bible study routine while raising littles but the nourishment for your soul is well worth it.
Here are five cool ways to refresh your Bible study routines this summer:
Try a new Bible study method. There are so many types of Bible study methods. From word studies to Bible journaling there’s a study method just for you. Sometimes switching your Bible study method can be a game changer. For example, if you enjoy the journaling then Bible journaling outside on the porch with a cool drink may just be the Bible study refresh you need.
Try a new study Bible. With so many study bibles to choose from it’s hard to know which one is the right fit. The ESV, NIV, and LASB are three of my favorite study Bibles. However, do your research and find the one that is best for you. It’s important to read Bibles with the most accurate translations whether it’s word for word or thought for thought. Some study bibles offer brief notes verse by verse and others offer extensive notes on an entire passage of scripture. If you haven’t used a study Bible before I encourage you to get one this summer!
Try a new devotional bible or devotional book. Devotional Bibles and books encourage spiritual growth. There are many devotional bibles and books written expressly for women, mothers, and new and mature believers. It’s important to note that these Bibles or books are often written by everyday people and have a bent toward their personal beliefs and opinions. Some of these Bibles or books are meant for daily reading or to be read over one year. So do your research and be discerning about the one you choose!
Meditate on Bible verses about spiritual refreshment. One of my favorite Bible verses is Isaiah 26:3 “You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast because they trust in you.” When I feel worn out by the daily grind of motherhood and the many burdens I carry, I recite this verse and think about all the times God has been my source of peace and it refreshes my soul. Meditating on scriptures about spiritual refreshment is like drinking a cool drink on a hot summer day except, your thirst will be fully satisfied.
Pick a time that works best for you. The season of Littles often leaves us, mamas, little time to do much for ourselves. But if we say we have no time to study the Bible we are lying to ourselves. If you’re a night owl, trying to study in the morning could be difficult. Perhaps late nights or the wee hours of the morning are better for you. If you’re a morning person, studying late at night would be hard and you may fall asleep and defeat the purpose. Try to wake up 20-30 minutes before the kids and study. Don’t sleep on quiet play time for the Littles either. Sometimes this is perfect to get a 5-7 minute reading done. You could then meditate on a verse or pray a verse during this time.
If your Bible study routine needs a refresh I pray that you will use the suggestions above to revamp your routine this summer. If you haven’t made time to study the bible in a long time I pray that you are convicted by the Holy Spirit to begin soon. Remember, you can do this! You can do all things through Christ who gives you strength. You just need a willing heart to start!
