In 1987, Congress designated the month of March as Women’s History Month.
People all across the nation are celebrating Women’s History Month this year by reflecting upon advances women have made over the last decade, particularly in the areas of earnings, education and fields of occupation. While these strides women have made over the past decade are noteworthy what matters most to God is a woman’s heart.
The most notable women to God are the ones with a pure heart who walk humbly and upright before him. Proverbs Chapter 31 shows us a portrait of a virtuous woman. She is hard-working, resourceful, dependable, profitable generous, creative and has an entrepreneurial spirit. She is strong, wise, kind and faithfully watches over her household.
Proverbs 31:29-30 declares, “Many daughters have done well, but you excel them all. Charm is deceitful and beauty is passing, but a woman who fears the LORD, she shall be praised.” God is clear in His word that a woman who reverences Him alone should be praised.
Today, the portrait of a woman to be honored and celebrated looks nothing like the woman in Proverbs 31. In today’s society the term “woman” is being redefined by women themselves instead of being defined by the God who created them. Being a woman today means being the best version of the “you” you believe you should be.
Many women being celebrated today are staunch feminists or women who acquiesce to the feminist agenda. They believe in gender neutrality to avoid offending those men and women who have chosen to alter the sexual identities God gave them. It means being a “pregnant person” versus a mother. It means being a business person vs a businesswoman.
Being a woman today means being independent of a man or living single with no desire for a family. It means intentionally deciding to raise a child alone only after establishing yourself financially. It means finding and marrying a man then usurping his authority or competing with him to ensure gender equity according to social norms. It means speaking your truth even if your truth goes against God’s word. It means standing for what’s socially acceptable vs what’s right.
God’s word is still the gold standard for womanhood everyday of the year. He created us in his image for his own purposes (Genesis 1:27). No matter how much the world changes or how people try to redefine womanhood, the truth of God’s word will never change. Heaven and earth will pass away and God’s word will still remain the same.
So what does it mean to be a godly woman in the 21st-century? Being a godly woman in today’s society means the exact same thing that it meant for the women in biblical times. As the world changes we must hold fast to our faith as they did. As wickedness and evil pervades our society, a godly woman must pray continually and stay spiritually awake.
Godly women must humble themselves before the Lord daily and ask for his help. As the women in the Bible followed Jesus, prayed, waited for his instructions and obeyed His voice, we must do the same. We may have more distractions today then women did back then but there is nothing new under the sun (Ecclesiastes 1:9). The women in biblical times were faced with the same temptations we face today.
Being a godly woman in the 21st-century is not easy but you can do all things through Christ who gives you strength. Being a godly woman means to fear (reverence) the Lord and obey His commandments. To put on the whole armor of God and be ready at all times for war (Ephesians 6:10). You must vigilantly pray for your family, community and nation. You must read and study the word of God daily and always be ready to wield the sword of the Spirit against the enemy of your soul.
The women who fear the Lord should be celebrated everyday. They take a stand for righteousness even when it’s unpopular. They love others but don’t compromise with sin. They walk in the Spirit and fulfill its desires by faith in Jesus Christ. They produce good fruit all year round. They care for their families and freely give of their time and talents to help others. They faithfully endure every season of testing and look forward to that great day when God will say, “Well done, my good and faithful servant.” These are the women who should be praised and even if they are not celebrated their works will speak for them.
