Why Our Family Doesn’t Celebrate Easter (and What We Do Instead to Celebrate Jesus!)

Easter weekend rolls around and the stores explode with bunnies, plastic eggs, and enough pastel sugar to send a toddler to the moon. But at our house, things look a lot different.

No Easter bunny.

No egg hunts.

No baskets brimming with candy.

Now before you gasp and scroll away…

—hear me out. We love celebrating Jesus’ death, burial, and resurrection! In fact, this weekend is one of the most sacred and joyful times for our family. But we’ve chosen to separate ourselves from traditions rooted in pagan customs and instead lean into simple, meaningful, and Christ-centered ways to honor our Savior.

Wait—Jesus Rose on Saturday? Yep! Here’s Why.

Our family believes that Jesus rose on the biblical Sabbath, which is Saturday, not Sunday. The traditional timeline doesn’t quite add up when compared to what Jesus said in Matthew 12:40—that He would be in the heart of the earth for three days and three nights.

If He died on Friday and rose on Sunday morning, that’s not a full three days and nights. But if He was crucified on Wednesday, buried before sundown, and rose after three full days on Saturday evening, just before the first day of the week began (Sunday), that timeline fits perfectly.

It may be a little different from the mainstream view, but it’s what makes the most biblical sense to us.

Here’s a peek at how we celebrate this beautiful weekend (and a few fun ideas you can try too!):

Our Weekend Timeline (Sabbath Resurrection Style!)

Wednesday: The Crucifixion

We read through the crucifixion story (Luke 23) and take time for quiet reflection. We talk about Jesus’ sacrifice and eat the Last Supper (whole wheat matzos and grape juice) as a family to remember Jesus.

Thursday & Friday: Days of Waiting

We do light activities like cross and tomb crafts, and “Thank You Jesus” praise songs to prepare our hearts. This is also a time of rest, reading, and remembering.

Saturday: He Is Risen! Sabbath Resurrection Day!

This is the highlight of our weekend!

We wake up to a joyful breakfast, worship music, dancing, and celebrating the Resurrection on the Sabbath. The tomb is empty, and our hearts are full!

Activities We Love:

  • Popsicle Stick Cross Craft

  • Empty Tomb Craft or Diorama

  • Bread Breaking to remember the humility and love of Christ

We read adult and children’s bibles to help fill in the gaps children’s bibles miss.

Sunday: Reflect and Rejoice

While others are celebrating Easter, we keep the joy going with a nature walk, praise, and talking about what resurrection life means for us today. It’s a peaceful extension of the celebration.

We don’t judge other Christians who celebrate Easter—we’re just pro-Jesus. Our goal is to keep the focus on Him, not bunnies or baskets. And whether your family celebrates like we do or differently, we hope these simple, meaningful ideas bless your weekend.
